DAN  HARRIS  FOUNDS    FAIRHAVEN

Sales Activity from 1883 through 1885
Dan Harris' Fairhaven lot sales stretched over a period of eight years, with a thee-year hiatus in the middle, and grossed a total of $105,188. These sales involved 247 lots and two unplatted parcels, seventy-five separate transactions and sixty-three purchasers. Thirty-eight of the purchasers were from Whatcom County; fourteen were from other areas in Washington Territory, two were from Oregon, four were from California and one was from Canada

Several of Dan Harris' lot sales were problematic. One lot was sold twice, five lots sold were later repurchased, forty lots were sold in one transaction with a defective deed and two sales were aborted. Nonpayment on one sale forced Dan Harris to file a law suit for repayment. Two patterns were discernable in the sale of lots. Early on a preference was shown for lots along Eleventh Street and then for lots along the west end of Harris near the shoreline. Corner lots were more popular than interior lots and Dan Harris sometimes charged a premium for them. He also extended steep discounts for multiple-lot sales.

Dan Harris made no sales in January and then six in February, the price in each instance being $100. The first two transactions took place on February 6th with the sale of four lots in Block 2 (bounded by Tenth, Douglas, Eleventh and Gambier). Charles F. Follman bought Lots 1 and 2 Thomas Lewis bought Lots 7 and 8. Together these lots comprised the entire north half of the block. Only two more lots were sold in February. On the 15th Spencer C. Foster purchased Lot 1 in Block 9 at the northeast corner of 11th and Gambier and on the 27th William E. Tait bought Lot 8 in Block 8, at the northwest corner of the same intersection. Four of the six lots sold in February were located on corners and four were situated on Eleventh Street, perhaps because it was the main link to the three towns north of Fairhaven: Unionville (soon to become Bellingham), Sehome and Whatcom.

During March, Dan Harris sold fifteen more lots and grossed $1,700. On March 1st he sold interior Lot 6 in Block 2 to Henry Ludlum for $100. On the 5th he sold interior Lot 3 in Block 2 and Lot 8 in Block 4 (at the southeast corner of 13th and Gambier) to Francis Burns for $100 each. On March 12th Dan Harris made the sale of his first complete block, conveying title for all eight lots in Block 3 (bounded by Eleventh, Douglas, Twelfth and Gambier) to James F. Gazeley for $875, or $109.37 per lot. On March 19th, Dan sold Lot 8 in Block 19 (at the northwest corner of 10th and Columbia) to Ole L. Jones for $125. On the 24th he conveyed Lot 4 in Block 43 to Thomas York for $125. Dan's last sales came on March 26th, when he sold Lots 1 and 2 in Block 12 (bounded by 10th, Knox, 11th and Columbia) to Elisha H. A Alvord for $275 or $137.50 apiece. Eight of the fourteen lots sold in March were situated on Eleventh Street seven were located on corners.
