DAN HARRIS SPEAKS FOR HIMSELF

Transcription of the Second Letter from Dan Harris
Presumably to His Nephew, B. F. Harris, Jr.

Edited for Clarity

Los Angeles                              May 16 1889

Your letter came to hand yesterday and I was glad to hear from you once again but I was very sick for I have the asthmatic and I smothers it is hard to breathe and I pass many hard nights in bed and on the floor and outdoors to get wind to breathe and I don’t know what is going to become of me and I have to do the best I can for the present and I think I shall go to the mountains high up and see if that will do any good the doctor says it may cure me for I have to do something for I am all broke up in business now for I can loan all of my money at 12 percent a year which brings me $4,000 a year and next year it will bring me $8,000 a year when I can get it to work right and I have to go to Washington Territory to settle up my business up there for I have 25 acres up there and 6 lots which is $43,000 and I have $55,000 here and I have 2 lots up in San Bernardino County and a house which cost me 1,000 Dollars and 2½ acres in Clearwater which cost $300 and one lot on Adams Street which cost $1,000 and a house and lot $3,000 and the party that rented won’t pay the rent so I have to put them out as soon as I get well enough to do it and it is more trouble to look after money than to make it for I have had a great deal of trouble in this far off land ups and downs but God made us to work but I am getting old and I hope these few lines will find you all well and prospering this is
