Announcements on the Founding of Fairhaven:

January 26, 1883: A NEW town has been laid out near Whatcom and named Fairhaven. It is on a deep-water bay, a mile south of Sehome, and on the line of the contemplated railroad from Seattle to Burrard Inlet. 14

June 15, 1883: Last Winter Mr. Harris laid off a town on his land named Fairhaven, and a number of buildings have already been erected thereon. This claim is completely sheltered from the prevailing winds, and is a good site for a steam saw mill. The mill site has been purchased from Mr. Harris and a mill is to be erected this summer thereon, so Mr. Harris informs me. 15

June 15, 1883: Fairhaven is just what the name represents nestled on Harris Bay where Daniel J. Harris first landed nearly thirty years ago. The town has not long been laid out, but there is a good hotel and several houses already built, and a large saw mill in prospect. On the town site may be seen the smouldering earthworks behind which the early Spanish navigators fortified against the Indians. 16

June 22, 1883: Mr. Daniel J. Harris says the new sawmill machinery has been bought in Chicago and shipped, and may now be expected any day. It affords the REVEILLE much pleasure to announce that, in the near future, three of the finest saw-mills in Washington Territory will be running on Bellingham Bay. It does not require the wisdom of a sage to predict a greater boom than ever for this place. 17

June 29, 1883: Mr. Harris, of Fairhaven, has painted his hotel, which improves its appearance very materially. 18

July 13, 1883: Fifteen lots sold last week. Mr. Harris is building at his wharf. Timber about to be cut for new mill. A new bridge is to be built leading to Fairhaven. Judge Gazeley is erecting two houses on his block. 19

August 3, 1883: Dan Harris has almost completed his wharf to the landing at Fairhaven. Dan is a worker. 20

August 17, 1883: Mr. James Weed has leased the hotel at Fairhaven for the term of three years. Having also subscribed for the REVEILLE, he is on the highway to prosperity. He informs us that construction will soon begin on the large new saw mill at that point. 21

August 24, 1883: James Weed, who has leased the Fairhaven Hotel, arrived last Monday with furniture and household goods, and will have his hotel ready for business by the first of next week. 22

October 5, 1883: Mr. James Weed, of the Fairhaven hotel, called at REVEILLE headquarters last Wednesday. He reports the building boom progressing at that end of the Bay. 23

October 12, 1883: FAIRHAVEN HOTEL, James Weed, Proprietor, Fairhaven, Washington Territory. Best accommodations. Hotel pleasantly situated near boat landing. Rates, $1 per day. Best table and beds. 24

The Fairhaven hotel, under the management of Mr. James Weed, is one of the best on the Sound.

Mr. Bissell, a gentleman of considerable wealth, has been making liberal investments in Fairhaven real estate during the past few days.

Several new buildings are going up. Judge Gazeley is putting up a two-story building, 16x20: D. J. Harris is building a two-story 16x30. (Note F) Chas. Schering has his two-story restaurant nearly completed. It is one of the best buildings on the town site.

Messrs. Knox & Musser's portable sawmill is now running, and active operations will be commenced on the large saw-mill as soon as material can be got out. This latter enterprise will be one of the largest and best equipped mills on the Sound.
